Hyderabad to Get AI-Powered Traffic Monitoring System to Ease Congestion

The Telangana government plans to address the city’s growing traffic woes. They have announced the introduction of an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based traffic monitoring system in Hyderabad. IT Minister D. Sridhar Babu revealed the initiative during a debate in the Assembly, emphasizing the need for smarter traffic management solutions.

AI to Revolutionize Hyderabad’s Traffic Management

With the number of vehicles in Hyderabad increasing rapidly, the government is turning to AI-driven automation to streamline traffic flow. Key highlights of the new system include:

  • AI-based automatic traffic signals to optimize signal timings dynamically.
  • Improved “free left” turns as part of an integrated traffic management plan.
  • Enhanced surveillance through the integration of CCTV cameras across Hyderabad’s three police commissionerates.

Sridhar Babu noted that Hyderabad already fares better than other major Indian cities in terms of average traffic speed (23.40 kmph), compared to:

  • Kolkata (16 kmph)
  • Delhi (17.37 kmph)
  • Mumbai (18.07 kmph)
  • Bengaluru (18.47 kmph)
  • Chennai (20 kmph)

However, the government aims to further improve efficiency with AI-powered analytics, reducing congestion and travel time.

Additional Measures for Better Traffic Control

Apart from AI-based solutions, the government is also:

  • Deploying more home guards to assist traffic police.
  • Setting up a dedicated Cyberabad police station to handle financial offenses, ensuring better law enforcement coordination.

Why AI for Traffic Management?

AI-based traffic systems use real-time data analysis to:

  • Adjust signal timings based on vehicle density.
  • Predict congestion hotspots and suggest alternate routes.
  • Reduce human errors in manual traffic control.

Cities like Singapore and Dubai have successfully implemented similar systems, leading to smoother traffic flow and lower pollution levels. Hyderabad’s move could set a benchmark for other Indian cities.

What’s Next?

The government has not yet announced a timeline for the AI traffic system’s rollout. However, officials confirm that preparations are underway. Once implemented, Hyderabad could become a model for smart urban mobility in India.

Key Takeaways:

🚦 AI-driven traffic signals coming soon.
