How Do Search Engines Work?- 4 Informative Basic Study

A Search engine is a system of software architected to search for information on the internet or the World Wide Web. In general, the search engines present the search results in response to the query of the user. We call them to search engine result pages. Some search engines also maintain real-time information. Here are the few search engines list 2020.

Such search engines work by running an algorithm on a web crawler. The content on the internet which is not capable of being searched by a surface search engine is called Deep web content.

How Do Search Engines Work?

To come to the point, search engines work by following three steps. Search engines follow these three steps to manage, to rank the websites and pages and to provide related and relevant SERPs ( Search Engine Result Pages).

Those 3 Steps are –

  • Web Crawling
  • Indexing
  • Algorithm
  • Search Engine Submission

1. Web Crawling

Web crawling is the medium by which the search engines work. They are able to search for the content published on the world wide web.  Simply speaking, web crawling is nothing but copying the content on the indexed pages.

It keeps an eye constantly and continuously whether there is any modification or change in the indexed pages published on the World Wide Web. Search engines maintain some programs to do these crawling activities. We call them Web Crawlers, Web Robots, and Web Spiders, etc.

A large amount of information stored on the web pages lies in the deep web or hidden web.  We can access these pages by submitting queries to the database. The regular web crawlers or web spiders cannot search for these pages without the links that point to them.

2. Indexing

Indexing is a process of saving the data crawled by the web spiders. This data is stored in the data centers of the search engines.  Search engines have large data centers to deposit and save the information crawled by the web spiders. These data centers are maintained in high-secured monitoring and with well-built infrastructure.

This data is again used to provide to the users against their search request. So Indexing is the process of organizing and maintaining a huge quantity of data. Such indexed pages and information can be searched very quickly within no time causing convenience to the user by giving appropriate information for the users’ query.

In Indexing, the IT tools aggregate and interpret the data of the search engine. Indexing is nothing but streamlining data retrieval. This is called web indexing. This web indexing helps the searchers and search engines more convenience in retrieving the relevant information instantly.

    3. The Algorithm

An algorithm of a search engine is a mathematical formula taking a problem as its Input and gives out a solution to the problem as output. It evaluates a number of possible solutions.

The algorithm of a search engine uses keywords as its input and gives out search results as the output or the solution with the help of the database stored with the search engine. The web crawlers recognize the keyword input of the search engine and supply the related and relevant information.

After the completion of the Indexing procedure, the search engines have a huge quantity of information in its database.  The search engines use this database search for the relevant and required information with the help of the search engine.

The algorithm plays its role between the query of the user and the supply of the appropriate information to the user by the search engine within no time. The algorithm plays its role very effectively in fetching the relevant information to the query.

The Algorithm is a very complicated equation that calculates a value for any site which we search for in relation to the searched keyword.

    3. Search Engine Submission

Search Engine Submission is a complex process. A webmaster submits uses this process to submit a website to the search engine. In general, the Web Crawlers search for and spy on the websites and collect and save the collected data with their data centers of the search engines.

The webmasters can submit one web page or they can submit the whole website using the Sitemap of the website.

Some software programs run by some search engines add links to the web pages that are indexed with the search engines. This linking method is very useful to get ranking for the website.
